Following the year in the class of Mahlau at the " Landeskunstschule in Hamburg" Recks path was filled with searching unrest.
In 1949 he spend a year as exchange student the Nottingham art school. 1950 to 1951 he spend at the "Ecole des Beaux Arts" in Paris and travelling in France, England and north Italy, he was constantly in search of the springs, the basic, the roots and the origin, which as he himself says is a typical German trait. He made numerous ink pen drawings in these years, amongst them the Self-portrait of 1949.
